fall ( 16″ x 28″ ) $800

this painting is one of my autumn series. in high impasto and with a vivid palette, it evokes the energy of the season.  the image is derived from a scene i witnessed above keene valley on a dark and stormy day  with breaks of sun. i thought of doing a before and after painting because after the storm the leaves were gone.

above the hudson. (1 ‘x 2.5’) $500

this painting was done plein air from the grounds of olana; frederic church’ estate above the hudson opposite the catskills. i was there with my friend and fellow artist esmond lyons on an art day out. i don’t often paint plein air, but when i do i invariably enjoy it and generally enjoy good results. in this painting i used a fairly high impasto in the foreground to contrast with the flatness of the sky. i used my familiar pallet for the foreground as well again contrasting the more hudson shcool pallet of the background

tulips (14″x36″) $600

this piece was the last in a series i did after a visit to holland during the spring some years ago. there were amazing fields of tulips and equally amazing skies. the early pieces in the series featured discernible flowers in beds which become more color fields as they recede. by this, the final piece in the series, the entire image has become a color field painting.

this piece is one of a series of small paintings i did this summer on slate. priced to sell mainly for the tourist market. they were on display at adirondack trails in bolton landing. i did a dozen or so and have only two left. reasonably priced at $100;  i also did some name plates for a couple of customers with an adirondack motif background. i’m open to doing more of these if there is interest.

this piece  is the second in a series of automotive paintings commissioned by jim cantrell of team raptor and vintage exotics competition engineering in phoenix AZ. a Corvette; it is a GT-1 class running at le mans.  It also ran IMSA GTO back in the day.  the painting is derived from a photo which is quite dark and blurred.  i sharpened and brightened the image and after much research even uncovered the  advertising in the background, which is distorted beyond recognition in the photo. the painting has a great ambience and captures some of the change of speed  the car (and viewer) experience through the final chicane. for this series i am keeping the surface fairly flat, with texture implied and impasto (which i enjoy using in most of my other work) kept to a minimum.

this piece; “american telco” is the first in a series of automotive paintings commissioned by jim cantrell of team raptor and vintage exotics competition engineering in phoenix AZ. it is a pretty straight forward project.  the point of focus in the original photo was behind the driver, with all the motion in front of the car. for the painting i moved the point of focus forward, and added some sense of motion at the back. i also intensified the color and the contrast making for a very nice painting of a very fast car.
